The Estoril circuit hosted this weekend the first round of the Finetwork FIM Junior GP World Championship. The AGR Team and our riders arrived in Portugal motivated and eager to return to action after a winter that has been too long for all of us.
The AGR Team will be present this season in three categories.
● In FIM Junior we will support the New Zealander Cormac Buchanan and the Canadian Torin Collins; both repeat with us.
● In Moto2 our riders will be Sam Wilford, one of our own, and our new Italian addition, Mattia Rato.
● In the European Talent Cup we repeat with the Australian Carter Thompson and incorporate the Dutch rider Owen van Trigt. With both we hope to help them grow as riders so they can continue to advance in their careers.
The weekend in Portimao was characterized by good weather, the usual wind that blows in that part of Portugal, and the impetus given by the young riders participating in the FIM JuniorGP, which led to incidents and accidents that forced the interruption of some of the races that took place... Things of 'the force of youth'.
Among our riders, throughout the weekend there was a bit of everything, as is typical of racing. But the positive spirit and determination of the team to help and support our riders in every way has always prevailed.
Junior GP
A multiple crash late in the race forced Race Direction to neutralize the race and reschedule it for a 5-lap sprint race.
Cormac Buchanan P13
Torin Collins DNF
Grid position was obviously a determining factor in a race with only 5 laps to go. Buchanan started from the fourth row - 12th - and entered the finish one place further back. Little else can be noted, except that the fastest lap of our New Zealand rider was less than three tenths of a second slower. An encouraging statistic for a weekend that should have ended differently.
In the case of Collins, he went to the ground during the third lap of the race.
Cormac Buchanan:
“Today’s race was quite a difficult one. In race one I wasn’t able to do a good start but was able to regain positions and felt quite good and had the same pace as the front group, but unfortunately the red flag came out when I was fighting for P10. In the second race, I went to P11 but then I made some mistakes and nearly crashed in the last lap, so I finished P14 finally. Not super happy but I made some points. For sure in Valencia it will be more.”
European Talent Cup ETC
The Talent, as it is called in the paddock, held two races in Estoril.
Race 1
Carter Thompson DNF
Owen van Trigt P 23
In the first race, Carter Thompson's expectations of a good race after qualifying seventh in practice were dashed in the early stages due an engine failure while riding in 5th position.
Alberto Fernandez, who was in Carter’s slipstream could not avoid hitting him. Both went down pretty hard but fortunately both riders emerged from the incident physically unscathed.
As for Owen van Trigt, a bad start relegated him to the back of the pack, a position from which he began to climb positions. Our rookie finished the race in 23rd place in a group that crossed the finish line separated by thousandths of a second.
Race 2
Carter Thompson P 14
Owen van Trigt P 25
Carter Thompson's second race was marked by the high speed crash in race one. The good feeling he had with the bike didn’t return in race two. In the first pass through the finish line after the start he had lost eight places with respect to his position on the starting grid. From then on he was caught in a group in which the continuous overtaking gave Carter no chance to go forward. After the 15 laps of the race Carter ended up entering first of that group, doing the best fastest lap among them and adding the 2 points awarded to the 14th classified.
As for Owen van Trigt, his second start in the ETC was a positive one. In his case his evaluation is not to be measured in his position at the finish line but in the evolution of his times. And comparing his best lap of Race 1 with that of Race 2, Owen clearly made a step forward, lapping almost two tenths faster in Race 2 than in Race 1. So it must be considered a positive weekend for our ETC rookie.
Carter Thompson:
“Today I had a good start in race one and was able to stay in top 5 and was able to keep a good pace. But on lap 3 going down the back straight my engine died then got hit and had a really fast crash. In race 2 I was not able to get a good feeling with the bike and didn’t have a great race.”
Moto 2
Bittersweet taste left us the weekend of Mattia Rato in Moto2. The Italian rider was fast from the very first moment, showing that he is aiming for everything for Sunday's races. In the end the podium escaped in both races, but Rato showed that he is going to be one of the roosters of the category. He left Estoril sharing second place in the provisional standings with his compatriot Niccolo Antonelli, a veteran World Championship rider and multiple GGPP winner.
Race 1
Mattia Rato P5
Sam Wilford P10
A red flag forced the interruption of the first Moto2 race, leading to an 11-lap restart. Our two riders had a good race, a statement that may be strange in the case of Rato, who starting from fourth on the grid 'only' finished fifth. However, the Italian of our team this year, showed a maturity and serenity that made him forget his bad choice at the start, which led him to pass the finish line on the first lap, ninth. Mattia chose the outside to tackle the first corner, which let a bunch of riders sneak up on him on the inside. But far from being obfuscated, he was able to keep his cool, which ended up giving him that fifth position at the finish.
In the case of Sam Wilford, his race was conditioned by his position on the grid, 15th. However, the brave Sam made a very good start, fought the whole race, and in a very tight final sprint entered the finish line tenth, three thousandths ahead of the rider who followed him.
Race 2
Mattia Rato P4
Sam Wilford P8
An intense and eventful second race, in which up to eight riders were out of the race due to various incidents. Rato again made a mistake in the way he attacked the first corner of the race, losing several positions on the entry again. When on the third lap he began to ride at the same pace as the race leader, he had already opened a lead that was impossible to cut. Nevertheless, Rato was still on the verge of the podium, beating his pursuer again on the finish line.
As for Wilford, he repeated his good performance of the first race, which only did not shine more because he was conditioned by the 15th place from which he started on the grid. Sam was not happy with his championship debut, which is good, but he certainly gave it his all throughout the weekend.
Mattia Rato:
"In the first race I made a couple of mistakes at the start and in the first two laps. Then little by little I got into the rhythm and in the end I managed to make the difference. In the second race I made a few less mistakes. In the end my pace was better than the others. On the last lap in the last corner I managed to overtake Yeray. I'm happy, the team worked very well and I feel fit."
Sam Wilford:
"After a difficult qualifying session yesterday, we managed to save the day today. I look to improve in Valencia, hopefully that means starting from a better position on the grid, which will allow me to fight for better positions in the race".
