The Polish rider extends his lead in the standings after a perfect weekend, securing pole position and two wins in two races
AGR Team continues to extend its lead. The fourth FIM MotoJunior round has come to an end at the Magny-Cours circuit, where Milan Pawelec has once again proved himself to be the rider in the best form in the Moto2 European Championship.
At the French circuit, the Polish rider secured pole position and two victories in both races – results that keep him at the top of the championship standings with a total of 148 points and a 16-point lead over the rider in second place.
In the first race, Pawelec got off to a determined start from pole position and looked to pull away, although Unai Orradre made life quite difficult for him, particularly in the closing stages of the race. The two riders battled for victory right up to the final laps and, with two laps to go, the Polish managed to overtake the Spaniard to cross the finish line in second place.
In the second race, Pawelec once again held his own at the front. The Polish was consistently among the top two and once again battled his main rival in the championship, Unai Orradre, with whom he had another clean and exciting battle right to the end. Pawelec managed to pull ahead in the final laps and claimed victory once more.
Meanwhile, J.J. Nahlous just missed out on the points in the first race, finishing sixteenth, whilst in the second race he came eighteenth. Owen van Trigt finished twenty-sixth and twenty-third in these races respectively.
In the Moto3 class, rookie Seiryu Ikegami managed to complete his first race in the category. The Japanese rider put in a very consistent performance and crossed the finish line in twenty-second place. Bad luck struck for Kgopotso Mononyane, who crashed on the final lap after being bumped by another rider.
As for Moto4, Luuk de Vries gained further experience and clocked up more kilometres during his first weekend at this circuit. The Dutch rider had a hard-fought last chance race in which he finished thirteenth.
Milan Pawelec: “It’s the first time I’ve won two races on the same day, so it’s a very special Sunday both for me and for AGR Team. In both races today we had some great, clean battles with Unai, and throughout the weekend the whole team worked brilliantly. We need to keep it up; we’re in great form and we want to keep racking up more results like these. A big thank you to the whole team and everyone who supports me.”
J.J. Nahlous: “The first race was tricky; I made a few mistakes and had some problems, but anyway, in the second race I felt a bit better about myself and the bike. We’ll keep working hard ahead of the next race.”
Owen van Trigt: “It’s been a tough weekend for me; it’s a difficult circuit on the big bike and I struggled a bit from Friday onwards. And not only that, I’ve had pain in my arm since Saturday’s qualifying session and it happened again today. In the first race I struggled quite a bit with this pain, but in the second race it only hurt towards the end, so I was able to set a better pace.”
Seiryu Ikegami: “We managed to finish a Moto3 race for the first time, and that’s a positive, although the start was a bit tricky. I wasn’t able to finish in the position I would have liked, but we need to take all the lessons we’ve learnt here so we can keep improving in Valencia.”
Kgopotso Mononyane: “Today was a difficult day. I struggled a bit, mainly because I was in a group where several rivals made mistakes, which meant we couldn’t move further up the field. On top of that, after gaining a few positions on the final lap, another rider knocked me off and I couldn’t finish. We need to learn from this and focus on continuing to work hard for the next race.”
Luuk de Vries: “I’ve felt more comfortable on the bike; we’ve taken another step forward. Obviously, these aren’t the results we want, but it’s been a difficult weekend for me. I’m pleased with the improvements we’ve made to the bike, particularly with the rear brake. Now, during the break, it’s time to work and reflect on what we’ve done in this first part of the season. Looking ahead to the next race, we’ll be doing a test at Valencia, a circuit I’m already familiar with, so we’re really looking forward to the second half of the season.”
